' S j ..The Auckland Harbour Board met yesI ' terday, Mr. H. D. Heather presiding. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote % stating that ' applications had been re- % ceived for licenses under the Timber Floating Act. to be Issued for tho Waitemata and Tamnki Rivci-s, and asking if the board had any objection to the whole cf the Auckland Harbour being gazetted under the Act. The harbourmaster reported that there was no objection to the proposal provided that a restriction was placed on the size and length of rafts to Ira towed. The channels in the up-river creeks wero narrow and winding, and should the size of (he rafts bo unrestricted they would be a source of danger to navigation. A reply was ordered to be sent to the commissioner in tho terms of tho harbourmaster's report.

The board decided to reduce tho rental 1;/ one-half during the time the wharf <t, under military guard. A letter was received Lorn Mr. G. H. Ecston asking that tho br>ard should relieve him of his liability in connection •with his lease in Customs Street West. fie had been drawn in the last ballot, and had been classed as fit for home service only. His principal ground for the application was Ant he was unable to meet the financial liability. The chairman stated that the matter had previously been before ths board, which ibid decided that if the applicant was tJEw.D in the ballot, and went on active service, it wotdd relieve him of his liability in respect to the lease. As ha was not going on active service the position had undergone no change. It was decided to refuse the request. A letter was received from the Mumster for Marine stating that as an assurance had now been given that the wharf age charge of 2s per ton on refined sugar would not he passed on to the pnbSc, the Government pad, decided to approve the by-law. - The secretary of the Marine Department wrote statiiig that the Avondale Road Board had apptrd for the foreshore of;Whau Creek, which bounded its district, to be- vested in it, and asking if the Harbour Board had* any, objection.
