♦ . ALLEGED THEFT OP A HAT. An elderly woman, named Ray Marteiirte, was charged in the Police Court yesterday before Mr. P. V. Frazer, S.M., with stealing a-Panama hat, value £2 9s 6d, the property of Milne and Choyce, Lid. The evidence showed that defendant was seen coming down the stairs c? Milne and Choyce's thop witii a hat wrapped in another firm's bag. When Questioned she said she had paid about 40s for the hat, but could not identify the saleswoman. When seen by a member of the firm she admitted stealing the hat, and said it wa3 the first time she had ever taken anything. On being arrested defendant said she took the hat on the spur of the moment, as she was out of work. Defendant said that a woman in £•-« cloakroom asked her if she would hold the hat as her children were troublesome. Defendant went into riiuuier room with the parcel, and on her return the woman was gone. u Remarking that the defence seemed rather thin," the magistrate remanded defendant for a. week for the purpose of having further inquiries made. Bail was allowed. MISCELLANEOUS. Pearl Young Hee was sentenced to three months' imprisonmeni for loitering for improper purpose?. George McCarier was fined 10s for being drunk while prohibited. I One first offender for drunkenness was i fined ss. Seven youths—William Golding, [Harold E. Tattersall, Stanley Holden, Randolph R. Tattersall, George Miller, j George R. Robertson, and a juvenile—were | charged with carnally knowing a girl aged 14 years. All the accused pleaded not guilty, and were committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail as before was allowed.'
