ASSAULT ON MR. ELLIOTT

DEFENDANTS REMANDED. DEMONSTRATION IN COURT. The Police' Court *was crowded to its utmost capacity yesterday when Gunner Charles Clements and his brother-in-law, Herbert Eugene McEntee. were charged with assaulting the Rev. Howard Elliott by striking him with a stick on Monday evening. When the two defendants stepped into the dock there was a demonstration of > cheering and stamping of het, with minor hissing and hooting. Air. Frazer promptly ordered the Court to be cleared. | Mr. Butler, for defendants, asked _ for I a remand for a week, as it was desired : to get evidence from Wellington. I Sub Inspector Broberg offered no objec-' tion to the remand, but asked that it be longer than a week, as Mr. Elliott would be out of Auckland then. The sub-in-spector then briefly outlined the story of the alleged assault. He said that Mr. Elliott was seized and held by two men while Clements struck him with a rawhide stick. Mr. Frazer asked counsel if the facts were disputed, and counsel said they were to a certain extent. It was true Mr. Elliott was stopped when he tried to' rim away, but it was absolutely denied that he was held when blows were struck, j Clements was the only one to strike any blows. Mr. Frazer agreed to remand the defendants for a week, when a further remand could be given if necessary. Bail | i would be as before. The magistrate said i that if there were any more demonstrations when the case came before the Court, a similar course would be adopted as had been adopted that day. If the public wanted to hear the case respect must be shown to the Court. __ i
