ENGAGEMENTS AT SEVERAL POINTS ON FRENCH FRONT
ENEMY EVERYWHERE KEPT OFT BY DEFENCE. ' Australian and N.Z. and Renter. (Reed. 6.5 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 13. A French communique states: The artillery has been active in the sector at Laffaux Mill and in the region of Craonne, north of the Aisne. Enemy raids at Souain and Auberive, in the Champagne, were carried out with strong effectives, preceded by a 36 hours' bombardment. The attacks were delivered by pioneer detachments 140 strong. Lively engagements resulted, ending decidedly in our favour. The enemy losses were particularly heavy. North of the Aisne the Germans during the night launched several attacks on our positions in the Hurtebise-Chevraux sector. Despite the violence of his effort, the enemy only temporarily gained a footing in our advanced line. An earlier report stated: Last night was marked by great mutual artillery activity, and a series of German attempts on various parts of the front, including the regions west of Cerny and Maison de Champagne, in the Champagne. All these attacks failed. The artillery duel continues in the region of Bezonvaux, on the right bank of the Meuse.
