RHODES SCHOLARSHIP.

CANTERBURY CANDIDATE. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] CHKISTCHURCH, Saturday. The Board of Governors of the Canterbury College have selected Mr, R. J. Richards as the college candidate for the Rhodes Scholarship for 1918. Mr. Richards is 24 years of age, and a son of Archdeacon Richards, of Invercargill. He was born in Dunedin. At present Mr. Richards is in camp as a second-lieuten-ant in the thirty-fourth reinforcements. Ho had a brilliant career as a student and athlete at Christ's College and Canterbury College. In 1915 he took his B.A. degree, and the Senior University Scholarship in Greek. Last year he took bis ii.A. degree with honours in classics. He reprerented his college in Rugby and cricket, and is a good long-distance runner. The New Zealand University recently received advice that no Rhodes scholar would be appointed this year, but the Board of the Canterbury College decided to make the nomination, which in all probability will hold good for 1919.
