UNDER LEAGUE RULES.
CITY DEFEATS PONSONBY. The interest manifested by supporters of the League code in the City and Ponsonby teams was again evidenced by the large attendance at Victoria Park,- on Saturday, when those two teams met for the fifth time, Needless to Bay, the match resulted in a fast and interesting game and a good exhibition of the code. Ponsonby had the immediate advantage from the kick-off. but City soon removed tie play to the opposite quarter, where, after a few minutes Davidson secured the first try. The kiok at goal was unsuccessful. After the first score the play became loose and more even, both sides playing well. The City forward!) carried tho ball to Ponsonby's twenty-five, when, after changing hands several times, it came to who crossed the line. Davidson took the kick and added two more point 3. City continued to attack, and after a further soell of even play, Francis again scored. The kick at goal failed. Ponsonby, during the remainder of the spell were attacking, but halftime went with City 11 points to their opponents' 0. On restarting, City came at it again, and after several < attempts, Hoitan secured and crossed the line, Davidson adding the points, and thus mibstantiatinj City's lead. Ponsonby now livened up, and made several determined attacks. After a pood combined run uphold, Bae crossed the line and opened Ponsonby's score. The kick failed. Ponsonby still continued the offensive, and just before the final whistle went Rae again scored. The kick was unsuccessful, and the game ended:—
