FIFTY TEARS AGO.
ATTACK BY HAUHAUS. ESCAPE OF hoane pureki. (From the HEEALD of August 18. 1867.) This morning two mounted troopers arrived from Opotiki, bringing the impor-t-ant intelligence that on Friday evening last the Waioeka redoubt had been surrounded by at least 100 Hauhaus. The redoubt was at the time garrisoned by 20 men under Lieutenant Lawson, who ordered a volley to be fired into the Hauhaus, which firing being heard at the camp, Major St. John, with a reinforcement, promptly made his way to the reoubt. -Major St. John and Sergeant i i'u riding up in advance, the latter had his horse shot under him; when the rebels, doubtless hearing the tramp of the militia .decamped to the bush. Traces " blood were afterwards discovered in that"direction.
