YOUTHFUL BOOKMAKER.
BETS TAKEN ON "DOUBLES."
FINES OF £40 IMPOSED.
A tooth, William Barrett, was charged in the Police Court yesterday before Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M., on two charges of betting: in a Queen Street billiardroom.
Chief-Detective M eMail on stated that defendant was employed in a billiardroom. On June 28 a constable approached defendant, and, finding that he was running a double" book— to —had no difficulty in making a bet on the Hastings races. On the following day a further bet was made. Mr. McMahon said he understood that defendant had been assisting a nook maker who had recently been lined j , I .and when the second bet was madfl defendant told the constable he was taking bets for this bookmaker.
