NINE MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT. [BY TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION".]
WELLINGTON, Friday. At the Supreme Court to-day Herbert E. RadclHfe. recently chief clerk in the Mines Department, was re-tried on charges of stealing £150 and £15, the property of the Government. The jury found the prisoner guilty, and added the following rider to the verdict:—" We recommend that the attention of the Public Service Commissioner be drawn to the need for better safeguards in dealing with public moneys (1) by requiring oayees to write amounts in words on receipts; (2) by mak ing a reflation to the effect that certifying officers cannot operate on either imprest accounts or deposit accounts without the counter-signature of another responsible officer. uuier • . dcliffe was .sentenced to nine months' imprisonment with hard labour. omns
