PIVOT OF THE ENEMY LINE.
DEFENCES OF POLYGON WOOD
.. LONDON,. August 6. The correspondent of the Paris Petit Journal describes Polygon Wood, oh fcha Ypres-Roulers line, as "one of the very strongest defences of the German line. Its woods and thickets are a veritable nest [of heavy guns and machine-guns. It is ! the central pivot of the enemy's defensive system, ana is used to give the German, troops time to come up, while the firing from it proceeds without intermission. Behind this line the Germans have only secondary defences."' The correspondent adds —The Germans in the first line are using armour composed of three plates, protecting the lower part of the body ana legs, like the ancient Greek hoplites— armed foot-soldiers.
