BOROUGH COUNCILS.

NEWMARKET. A meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor. Mr. C. Leek, presiding. The foreman reported that the rain during the past fortnight had caused, many of the drainage pits "in the borough to overflow, but they had now been cleared and the channels swept. Portion of the Khyber Pass Road had been scarified and . was now being repaired. Road improvement work in Broadway and Maung&whau Road had been completed at a cost of £124. The report waa adopted, the council expressing satisfaction that the late abnormal' rains had caused so little damage: . The council granted a permit - for a collection to be made in aid of the funds of the Italian Red Cross* Society. • TAKAPUNA. The Takapuna Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. W. Blomfield, presiding. Resolutions were carried expressing sympathy with Mr. E. E. Grimwade. a member of the council, and Mrs. Grimwade. on the death in action of their son, Sub-Lieutenant Grimwade, and with Mrs. James Smith on the death in action of her husband. Captain James Smith, who was a resident of the borough at the time of his enlistment, and who for some time commanded the Takapuna unit of the National Reserve. A tender of £95 from Pooley and Leighton for preparing Tiri Road, for metalling was accepted. It was decided. to clean and* spread shell on tbo footpath in Waitemata Road, to carry out drainage schemes to take storm water away from Anzac Street and Norwood Road, to fill in dangerous holes in Lake Town Road and Francis ' Street, to clean the footpath and, drains in Muritai Road and the footpath 'forming an extension of Mil ford Road, to repair the carriageway in Fenwick. Avenue, and to take steps to prevent further damage by washouts to the storm water drainage system in Cecil and Holiday Roads. . It was resolved to draw the attention ' of the Telegraph Department to a complaint by Mr. Arthur that although some residents of the borough paid a special amount for obtaining telephonic communication with Auckland after 8 p.m. it was rarely that they were successful in doing so.
