THE RUGBY GAME. SUCCESSFUL COLLEGE DAY. For the seoond time this season there was a College Day at the Shot; Grounds on Saturday, the Grammar School A team meeting and defeating the King's College senior fifteen. The game was a bright and interesting one. and while not so evenly contested as the first match between the two teams was productive of better football. Grammar School proved a good deal tne better team, and won by 21. points to 0. In the senior competitions University defeated Grammar School Oid Boys by 14 points to 3, while a, close game between Railway and Grafton resulted in a win for the former by 8 points to 4. UNIVERSITY V. GRAMMAR OLD BOYS. The ground was rather heavy for tile match between University and Grammar benooi. Old Boys, but otherwise conditions were good i'lay was oi a patchy naturo lor a start, neither side playing with a great deal of confidence.. Right through the first quarter, and the major portion of the second, there was no score, the efforts of both teapis lacking just the amount of finish necessary for complete success. Just on half time a good piece of work by the Railway backs, aided' by the pace of Barclay and Burns, enabled the latter to score a nice try. which Stewart converted. The opening of the» second spell saw Grafton shaping better. Presently, however, a brilliant piece of work by Burns resulted in an excellent individual try. which was not converted, giving Railway a le<a<d of 8 points. In the final quarter play was close, both sets of forwards battling hard. UNDER LEAGUE RULES. CITY . DEFEATS. PONSONBY. The final games in the second round of the Auckland Rugby League championships were played at Victoria Park on Saturday afternoon. After a fast and willing game City inflicted upon Ponsonby tho first defeat that team has suffered this season, winning the game by 5 points to nil. In the preliminary match N€wtor. beat North Shore by 8 roints to 3. CITY V. PONSONBY. The game between Ponsonby United and City Rovers was a fast and exciting exposition of the code, with fortune swaying varying ways throughout both spells. City played a_ determined game, the Ponsonby backs being well . marked throughout the match. _ The whole of the first spell resolved itself into a series of even exchanges, a good deal of the play hovering about midfield with determined sallies by each side in turn Early in the second half, after a couple of rallies. Rukutai made an opening and sent on to Mitchell, who dashed across and touched down. Davidson converted, and City were five to the good. Ponsonby made desperate attempts to make good, but determined defence o n the part of 'City kept them out. NORTH SHORE. The match between Newton and North Shore was played as a curtain-raiser to the'other senior game. The first half was evenly contested.
