GREAT GERMAN LOSSES IN THE CHAMPAGNE.
OVERWHELMING DEFEAT IN SUNDAY'S ACTION. THREE WAVES OF ASSAULT CUT TO PIECES. Australian and N.Z. Cable. (.Received 11 p m.) LONDON. July 17. The French military critic, M.. Marcel Hutin, writes: " Scarcely ever has a German attack been made with such a wealth of troops and determination as that against the French positions on High Mount and the Casque and Teton, in the Champagne, on Sunday. Our fire literally cut to pieces three waves of assault, while the subsequent hand-to-hand fighting was such that the German defeat was overwhelming."
