ATHLETIC SPORTS.

FOOTBALL. THE RUG3Y GAME. WIN FOR UNIVERSITY. Only one of tho two games set down for decision in the Rugby Union championships was played on Saturday, University defeating Railway at the Show Ground by 8 points *° 6. The match between Grammar School Old Boys and Grafton was postponed on account of the unplayable state of the Eden Park ground. »

UNIVERSITY V. RAILWAY. The game between University and Railway was a hard fought contest throughout. Tho students' team was considerably altered from the usual combination, neither Gasparicb nor Boucher turning out. University were the first to attack and kept up the pressure for a time, but tho Railway forwards got in And gradually transferred matters to the centre. Then their backs commenced a passing rush which, however, came to nothing. From a loose scramble in the centre the students got the ball and a passing rush ended in Inglis scoring a try which Goldwater converted. Railway immediately began to press and the students were compelled to force twice in succession, but the quarter ended without further score. The second quarter was not productive of points. Play ranged up and down field. Railway being compelled to force a couple of times. The second spoil opened with play hard and fast. A. Railway player was ordered off the field, but still the side kept up the pressure. Eventually a loose rush gave an opening to Sindlin. who dashed over, failing to convert his own try. Railway continued to force the pace, keeping the students busy on the defence. Eventually a mark by King enabled Sindj.j to place a goal, which put Railway in the lead, the last quarter opening just after. University immediately set to work to make good the deficit, and a rash down on iho- full-back gave- an opportunity to Inglis who got across, but Goldwater failed to convert. This was the last score. Both sides tried hard to add further points, but the game ended:— University 8 Railway 6 Mr. Coltman was referee. SECOND GRADE. Ponsonby, 36 points, beat Grafton, 3: Grammar School A beat University A by 6 to 0; Parnell. 42, beat University B. 0. THIRD GRADE. Grammar School Old Boys beat Marist Bros. Old Boys by 24 points to 3. FOURTH GRADE. Parnell. 28 points, beat Grafton, 0; Ponsonby, 20, beat Parnell. 0; Marist Bros. Old Boys, 20, beat Normal Old Boys, 0. SENIOR CADET MATCHES. 31st Company, 6 points, beat 33rd Company. 0; 68th Company beat 30th Company by 9 to 3. SECONDARY SCHOOL UNION. ' SENIOR GRADE. The senior match King's College v. Grammar School B was played as a curtainraiser at the Show Grounds. King's College proved the stronger on the day, winning by 11 points to 0. Tries were scored by Vosper, Menzies and Phillip*), Heard converting one, making the score 11 to 0. SECOND GRADE. _ Grammar School A, 16, beat Grammar School B. 3 King's College beat Grammar School C by 13 to 0. THIRD GRADE. Grammar School A. 14 points, beat King's College A. 0; Grammar School B beat Grammar School C by 5 to 3.

UNDER LEAGUE RULES. PONSONBY DEFEATS NEWTON. Both the senior matches in the Rugby League competition were played at Victoria Park. The meeting between Ponsonby and Newton resulted in a win far Ponsonby by three points after a most attractive game, which was witnossed by a large crowd of spectators. North Shore beat Grafton by 11 points to 8.

PONSONBY V. NEWTON. The meeting between Ponsonby and Newton provided an excellent exhibition of th» Northern Union game, full of excitement right throughout. At no stage in the game could the result be anticipated, for while Ponsonby had a lead in points most of the time, towards the end it appeared as if Newton must score again. Newton gained first points. Lang crossed the line after a good run, in which he outpaced the opposition, scoring in a good position. Potier kicked a fine goal. Ponsonby immediately retaliated. A passing rush from inside halfway saw Jones touch down. Cross converting the try. Immediately after the kick-off, a desperate rush by Ponsonby resulted in Henderson getting, over. Ho lost the ball, but Clark dropped. on it. and Cross again converted. This proved' the last score until near the end of the game. Ponsonby attacked consistently for some time, but the Newton defence, tested in every way, proved adequate, the backs fielding the, ball especially well. Towards the concluding stages Newton m-.de. a wonderful recovery, and it looked os if they would null the match out of the fire. After they had almost crossed the line a couple of times Potier placed a penalty goal, and the game ended: Ponsonby 10 Newton .. . . . . . . [ * 7 Mr. Weston was referee. NORTH SHORE V. GRAFTON. Despite being compelled to play short. North Shore succeeded in defeating Grafton by 11 points to 8. The score for the winners was made up of three tries, scored by Matthews. Walters and Kirk, and a penalty goal kicked by Walters. North Shore had put on all three tries before Grafton scored. Then Martin kicked a penalty goal, reducing the deficit to 7. After North Shore reached 11 Parks got over for Grafton, and Marshbank repeated the performance a little later, but both attempts at goal failed, the game ending: North Shore .. XI Grafton .. . . . . , ' q Mr. Hill controlled the same.

SECOND GRADE. Ponsonby, 18 points, beat Newton. 2.

THIRD GRADE. North Shore defeated Pupuke by 11 points to 5.

FOURTH GRADE. Grafton, 12 points, defeated Richmond. 0: City and Otahuhu drew, 3 all.

FIFTH GRADE. Otahuhu and North Shore drew, 3 all.

SIXTH GRADE. North Shore, 9 points, beat Richmond. 0.

THE ASSOCIATION GAME.

GRADE COMPETITIONS. The Auckland Footfall Association championships were continued on Saturday in all grades. __ In the senior division Wild Rose secured a narrow win from Richmond by 1 goal to 0, while Everton defeated Brotherhood by 4 to 1.

BROTHERHOOD V. EVERTON. Brotherhood and Everton met at Victoria Park. Play throughout the first spell was of an _ even and interesting character. Everton did a great deal of the attacking, but the Brotherhood defence stood the test well. Eventually Everton got through to some effect, Lynneberg accepting a pass and placing a good goal to his team's credit. From the kick-off Brotherhood forced the pace, and the Everton goal was in considerable danger. The attacks were held off for a time, but at length Smith, getting the ball as it bounded from the goalkeeper, put it through, equalising the scores. _ The spell ended with the game in this position. At the opening of the second half Brotherhood made a great effort to gain a lead. Pearson attaining this end shortly. After a little more pressure Lee repeated the performance, after which Everton came away with an attack. • For a time the exchanges were even, but Brotherhood again came back with an attack. The match between Richmond and Wild Rose, played at the Domain, resulted in a narrow win for Wild Rose by 1 goal to 0. The whole of the first spell went by without a goal being registered. The wind worked in favour or Richmond, but the defence kept them out. and play was of a give-and-take nature. The . second half opened with Wild Rose attacking, but Richmond, now playing, against the wind, staved them off for a time. At length a good run by Lockvood resulted in the only goal of the match, his shot boatine the coalkeeper. ARETA BEATS MOUNT EDEN. .The Auckland Hockey Association championships -were continued in all grades ati Kemuera on Saturday Both senior matches resulted in a manner having an interesting bearing upon the championship positions. Areta- succeeded in defeating Mount Eden, and went to the top of the list, while Edendale Ola iioys beat University by 3 goals

ARETA 7. MOUNT EDEN. The meeting _ oo+ween Areta and Mount il-den resulted in a. evenly contested gam*-, the advantage Koing to the former team hy 3 goals to 2. The first score came to Mot-nfe is-drn, Jansen finding the net. Areta immediately equalised, Fletcher scoring after a sound effort. Shortly before the conclusion of the first spell Thomas placed Areta in the lead with a smart shot, and the game reached half-way with the score in their ftvcnr Areta increased the lead in the second spell' once again through tho agency of Thomas! i-hen j Mount Eden drew up, a goal beinplaced by A. Alexander from an opening by Malcolm. EDENDALE V. UNIVERSITY. After having run the students close in tho two previous matches, Edendale Old Boys succeeded in beating University by 3 goals to 2. The students were the first to attack and the first to score, Can securing the opening goal of the game. This remained the position until half time, the game failing to reach a decisive issue until much later. Early in the second half Edendale equalised, Rowe netting the goal. Then the students drew away, Harman being the one to score. Edendale took command ■ after this. Rowe gaining two more goals, which gave them the game despite a- good effort on the part o!
