CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

A meeting of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon. There were present: Messrs. R. Burns, president. E. Anderson, H. W. Hudson, A. It. Robertcn. H. C. Tewsley, S. A. Langnct, G. A. Lunn, J. B. Macfarlane, T. Peacock, A.A.Martin, andß. L. Stewart. A letter was read from the Acting-Min-ister for Agriculture, the Hon. W. H. Hemes, stating that he could not see his way to modify the existing regulation in regard to the importation of hides from the Islands. He said the regulations did not affect the prices obtained for the hides, as they were fixed by Governmentvaluers. The regulations regarding the entry of the hides into Australia were just as stringent. The president said that the last statement was quite incorrect. It was decided to allow the matter to stand over until the Minister for Agriculture, the Hon. W. D. 9. Mac Donald, visits Auckland. Tho Acting-Minister for Agriculture wrote stating that he was looking into the question of placing grain and seeds and fertilisers in the same category in regard to railway freights. It waii decided to defer the matter until the Minister tor Agriculture visits Auckland The Paeroa Chamber of Commerce wrote suggesting a conference between representatives of the local bodies of the districts represented by the Auckland and Paeroa Chambers in order to discuss matters of public import; nee. It was decided to reply that in any matter in which the chamber ran assist the Paeroa Chamber it will be glad to do so. The Rodney Chamber of Commerce wrote, forwarding a copy of a resolution recently passed by that body in regard to reciprocal trade relations with the Motherland and other parts of the Empire. It was urged that it be a recommendation to the Standing Committee set up by the executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and upon any Imperial advisory councils that while heartily supporting preferential treatment for British goods preferential treatment of a substantial nature should be accorded to the primary products which New Zealand exports to Great Britain and other parts of the Empire. It was resolved to support the resolution of the Rodney Chamber.
