TE AWAMUTU, Saturday. A man namod Edward Price, who gave his address as Ractihi, was charged at the Magistrate's Court yesterday with having taken liquor into the King Country for sale amongst the Mao»is. Ho pleaded not guilty to this charge, but admitted further charges of having signed false names to his orders for liquor. Tho police evidence was to the effect that Bnco had taken part with the Maoris at To Kawa in two tangis recontly. A month ago he was known •to have procured fairly large supplies of whisky from hotels at Te Awamutu and Ohaupo. As a groat deal of drinking had been taking place amongst tho natives, anil as his actions were suspicious, he was followed or. to tho train, where he had in. his possession a package of liquor labelled in tho name of W. Lees. The summons had been sent to Raetihi, but accused could not be located. Ho was found tho day before the hearing still living with the Maoris at Te Kawa. Accused did not give evidence, but submitted he had not had the liquor for sale, stating bo had purchased it on behalf of the natives, and with their money. 'Hie magistrate pointed out that in such cases tho onus rested on the accused to disprove the prosecution, 'and where this was not ' done, as in the present case, the custom 1 or the Courts was to impose tho maximum penalty. Too many Europeans were concerned in trafficking the liquor amongst the natives. Accused was thereupon convicted and lined £50 with costs. , ( _____
