HOCKEY.
OPENING OF SEASON, The club competitions in the various, grades playing under tho Auckland Hockey rAsm-, ciation were opened :at ■ Rcmuera on Saturday. Conditions ; were good tor the cape, and tho ground in excellent condition,* though, a little ;heavy on>account' of the recent wet weather.,. An excellent muster of enthusiasts appeared for the opening matches ' though the great majority of teams wero necessarily composed of young players. Only two senior matches per Saturday will 'be played," four clubs having entered senior teams. Mount • Eden and ' ; University won their games against Areta and Edendalo Old Boys respectively. MOUNT EDEN. , \ The game between Areta and Mount Eden was fairly erenly contested, ' both sides taking ■ their | share -in , attack, but both, as is understandable : early in the;'season,' often lacking just that finish to - enable ' them to

Edendale•■■■, immediately ■•■! assumed tbo offensive, a' passing rush by the forwards resulting in a score by Grayson. .A long spell of oven play followed, each side indulging in rallies, only to be staved off by the defence. . About half < way through the second spell 'a- long .'shot by, Carr, for University * equalised' the scores. Coming back to the attack the students forced tho boll down the field. Waddingham scored again.
