Benjamin Savage, bushman, Hikuteia, stated that he was a threequarter-caste • Maori. He had volunteered, believing he was a reservist, but had since found he was not liable under the Military Service Act. Ha wished his enlistment cancelled. Appellant's wife'and mother both sup- • ported the appeal. The latter said she bad four soldier sons. The board said the family had an excellent record, and the mother should be proud of it. It would gladly allow her fifth son to remain to comfort her in her old age. It recommended that Savage should be given indefinite leave. The appeal of Victor Nielson, labourer, Paeroa, who proved he was a Dane, and therefore ineligible for the reserve, was allowed. Appeals- by Thomas Noonan, miner, Karangahake, and Andrew Rodgers, ■ labourer, Omahu, who did not appear, were dismissed. Neil Ewen MeKenzie, dairy farmer, North River, Waipu, said he had previously been before the board under section 35, when his appeal was allowed. Since then he had been drawn in the 1 ballot, and now appealed on the ground of undue hardship, because it would inearbreaking up his farm, and also on the ground of public interest, as he was milking 40 cows and doing farm work in. general. Norman MeKenzie, father of appellant, said, ho could not, on account of his age, carry on the farm if Neil was taken. W. R. Mackesy, land agent, said - he was of opinion that labour to carry on the farm could be obtained at a price, The appeal was ; dismissed, exemption being granted to May 31. John Campbell McKay, fanner, Waipu, said he was the only one left to run the farm, having two brothers at the front and one killed. The appeal was adjourned sine die, or until one brother returns fit V to take appellant's place. • Joseph Heurv Sloane, farmer, of Pukehuia, who had Unlisted, appealed for extended leave. The appeal was supported by Mr. A. R. Crane, member of the local irußtee Board.
