BRITISH GAINING GROUND ON WHOLE SOMME FRONT.
ADVANCES FROM BAPAUME TO PERONNE. ST. PIERRE VAAST WOOD BEING OUTFLANKED. United Service. LONDON, March 6. The French newspaper Petit Parisien states that the obstinate straggle in the Bucquoy salient, three miles east of Gommecourt, has turned to the advantage of the British, who crossed the Gommecourt-Puisieux road at several places and stormed Rossignol Wood, a rectangular area 400 yds in length. They reached the outskirts of Les Essarts-Bucquoy, also within a few yards of Hill 154. The evacuation of the salient is expected. Further south, to the east of Combles, the British occupy the Moislains spur, outflanking St. Pierre Vaast Wood, the scene of sanguinary actions. The British are closing on Allaines, opening the road across the Nord Canal to Mont St. Quentin, which dominates Peronne. The British are fighting with great vigour.
