FIFTY YEARS AGO.
THE HAUHAU RISING.
FIGHT AT WHAKAMARAMA.
81 _____ r 9 (From tho HERALD of February 19. 1867). 01 i Oct of tho smartest engagements occurJ i ring during tho present trouble at Tau- ® ' ranga took placo on the 15th. At an early hour an attack was made on Whakaj marama by our whole force of 500 men, . including our allies, the Arawas, who vied - with tho Pakehas in the attack, and acted 1 extremely well. Tho militia, led by Col, *' Harrington and Major St. John, showed 01 great pluck. Tho men under them pay ! them the highest tribute of praise. Two r of ours, Henry Jeffs, from Opotiki, and belonging to the Ist Waikato Regiment, ' and Thos. Jordan, of the Engineer Corps, ' were killed. A number of others, includ- ( ing several Arawaa, were wounded, and . some of our men are missing. But tho enemy has been the greater sufferer. The
Maoris admit having lost a number of men, while others are wounded. Wo captured one prisoner. Our men behaved
most gallantly, and' the fact of the enemy being driven about four miles through tho almost impenetrable bush will show them they, can be reached, even in their native fastnesses.
