MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL. Judging by the gross traffic receipts of the Manchester Ship Canal for the first nine months of 1916, thero_ appears to be no doubt that the directors will be able to maintain the initial dividends of 1916, namely 3s and Is 6d per share respectively on preference and ordinary, in spite of the small sum brought forward from 1915—about £8000— and of the higher cost of labour and stores. In 1915 marked progress in the receipts of the waterway was reflected in a net increase of 103.818. The first half of 1916 showed a steady increase of traffic, though on a rather smaller scale than the progress in the spring of 1915. For the first nine months of the current year, the total approximate receipts were £752,987, as against £530,698 for the corresponding period in 1915, and £457,944 for January-September, 1914.
