GREAT DAMAGE AT CLERMONT

Australian and K.Z. Cable Association. (Received 11.20 p.m.) BRISBANE, Jan. 9. The flood in tho Hughenden district of Queensland washed away tho house of a selector named Jenkinson. Nine members of tho family were clinging to the roof, when tho house struck a tree and capsized. Two sons and two daughters managed to cling to the tree and were rescued after 16 hours' exposure. Five other persons wero drowned. A number of cases of drowning continue to be reported throughout the flooded areas. Many persons who had been marooned were rescued after sensational escapes, and severe Bufferings. Somo wore almost demented, Tho latest estimates of the flood damage in the Clermont district bring the total to over £300,000. Over 1000 buildings have been ruined. The water continues to rise at Rockhampton, where a . flood is feared.
