SPORTING.

AUCKLAND RACING CLUB.

SPRING MEETING CONCLUDED?

RACING IN THE RAIN.

COLONEL SOULT WINS LEADING

EVENT.'

The Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting was concluded at Ellerslie yesterday, under wet-weather conditions, which, to some extent, marred the pleasure of the afternoon's sport and affected the attendance. Mr. J. F. Hart land, secretary, and an able staff of assistants, had all necessary arrangements under complete control, and, despite the unfavourable elements which prevailed, ■ the racing was of an interesting nature.

! Despite his failure in the City Handicap on Saturday last. Colonel Soult was tent out j the popular fancy for the principal event, the ! King Edward Memorial Handicap, and. after ; lying handy to the leading division in thd ; early stages of the ©vent, the aged ton of Soult justified the support accorded him by , taking command about three furlongs from home, and won in attractive style over the ! business end. I During the race for the Hunters' Steeplei chase, Mollyhawk fell and suffered a broken 1 leg, and the friendly bullet had to be re- ! quisitioned. When Tararu Jack struck a I hurdle during the running of the Manukau I Hurdles he suffered a sever© cut on the stifle. I Another incident of note was that four horses I fell on the flat during the race for the Gor--1 don Handicap, though, fortunately, nothing serious happened to horses or riders. Rosori , was the first to fall, the others being Bellacity. Lady Floss, and Archway. An inquiry was %held into the cause of the fall, but the evidence of the horsemen called went to show that the affair was purely accidental. Another matter which engaged the attention of Mr. A. W. Gordon, stipendiary stewaid, was that of questioning the rider of Tragedy King for his handling of that gelding in the Manukau Hurdles. The totalisator staff handled the sum of £30,163 during the afternoon. This made a total of £63,426 for the two days, an increase of £6457 over the amount registered at the I corresponding meeting last spring.
