COMPLETE SETTLEMENT.

INCREASE OF WAGES AND

BONUS.

A complete settlement was arrived at in the industrial dispute between the ferry steamer engineers and the employers, which came before a Conciliation Council yesterday. The men asked for no increase in wages, but the companies voluntarily offered an increase to certain of the engineers. The Devonport Steam Ferry Company went further, and granted bonuses to the men on certain conditions, in addition to the increase in wages. Mr. T. Harle Giles, conciliation commissioner, presided. The assessors for the union were Messrs. William Entwhistle, Robert Sloan, and S. L. Wilson, with Mr. T. Cain, secretary of the union, as advocate. Messrs. E. W. Alison and Alex. Alison were assessors for the Devonport Ferry Company, and Mr. J. F. Welch for the Takapuna Tram and Ferry Company. Mr. E. C. Wright acted as advocate.

The following is the test of the new working agreement: —

The hours of work remain the same as in the old award, namely, 62£ hours a week, exclusive of meal hours. No engineer shall be called upon to work moro than 12 hours in any one day, except at overtime rates. Engineers are then classified.

Wages : Engineers in class A shall, whilst employed in the runs specified in the classification list, be paid at the rate of £4 per week of 62£ hours, which amount is 5s moTe than was asked for in the men's demands. Engineers of class B remain at the same wages as in the old award, viz., £3 15s per week of 62£ hours.

Overtime: All time worked in anv ore week in excess of the hours hereinbefore prescribed shall be paid to engineers of class A at the rate of Is 9d an hour per hour increase to engineers of class B at Is 6d an houi as per the oid award. The Devonport Ferry Company provide for bonuses for engineers as follows: —A bonus of £15 shall be paid to each engineer who for the period of 12 months, from December 1 to November 30 in each year, runs the steamer of which he is engineer without doing any damage or meeting with any accident through his inattention, neglect, or incompetence, involving the company in any expense for repairs or liability for claims of any description. A bonus of £7 10s shall be paid to each engineer who for the like period runs the steamer of wlv h he is engineer so that the total cost to the com pany for repairs or liability for claimß in respect of such steamer arising from accident through his inattention, neglect, or incompetence during such period does not exceed £10. A bonus of £2 10s shall be paid in like manner « here the cost of damage or liability during such period does not exceed '£20. The Takapuna Tramways and Ferry Company is exempted from the provisions of the bonus clause. Provision is also made for engineers in temporary charge of steamers. Holidays on full pay each year have been increased from 10 to 14 days. It was mutually agreed that" the award should come into force on December 1 next, and continue in force for a period of three years.
