FROSTS AT WHANGAREI.
HAVOC IN MARKET GARDENS. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAKEI, Monday. A frost on Friday night played havoc in local market gardens, and the loss in some cases is very heavy. Tomato and cucumber plants were badly affected, and several growers who had incurred great expense in utilising largo areas with a view to securing high prices at the early sales are deprived of their hopes. Frost so late in the year is not altogether unique in this locality. Two years ago there was a devastating drop in temperature as late as the end of October, but usually spring conditions are continuously mild enough to allow early planting to be done with success. The cold on Friday night and Saturday morning was unusually intense for any time of the year, and there ere records of frost occurring at places where it has never before been experienced. In the early hours of yesterday morning another frost was visible, and though in a much milder form than that of Friday night it contributed towards the more complete disappointment of market gardeners,
