THE RUGBY GAME. CHARITY CUP CONTEST. GRAMMAR'S EASY WIN. The annual charity cup contest between the winner and runner-up in the Auckland Rugby Union's senior grade competition was played at Eden Park on Saturday by the University and Grammar School Old Boys teams, in the presence of about 2000 spectators. The day was hot, but the turf was springy. Tho game was played with dash from start to finish, but whereas the chamrions failed to put the necessary finishing touch to numerous attacks, Grammar, on the other hand, made the most of opportunities, and eventually won by 26 points to 5. GRAMMAR V. UNIVERSITY. Aided by a light wind and with the sun at their backs, University attacked moat of the first quarter. The absence of such brilliant scoring backs as Piatt and Maxwell, was folt by 'Varsity, and many opportunities were missed. In the second quarter Nicholson opened Grammar's account with a try. Before half time was called Rowc and Badelcy ."cored trios, both of which were converted by McLean. Grammar, at this stage, led by 13 points to 0. After resumption of play, Walker, of University, scored a spectacular try, which Boucher converted. Rowe added points to Grammar's total with a, try, which McLean converted. In the final quarter Grammar's total was increased as tie remit of an excellent penalty goal kickod from half-way by McLean, and he also converted a try scored by Rowe. Hicks, Simpson and Tate scored tries, two of which were converted by Simpson. The 35th Company ha? now won the senior cadet championship. PUBLIC SCHOOL MATCHES. A GRADE. Remuera defeated Vermont Street by 6 points to 4, and won the championship of the grade. B GRADE. Normal defeated Bayfield. 12 points to 3. C GRADE. Point Chevalier defeated Ellerslie, 8 points •to 0. Newmarket defeated Northcot*. 30 points to 0. OUTSIDE MATCH. Sacred Heart College defeated City (Hamilton), by 3 points to 0. Roberts scored a try. HAMILTON COMPETITION. WON BY HIGH SCHOOL. - [bt TELBJRATH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HAMILTON, Saturday. ■ The Rugby competition under the auspices of the Hamilton Union was decided this afternoon, when the High School fifteen convincingly defeated St. Mary's by 17 points to 3. St. Mary's commenced promisingly, ..'and Davis scored a try within the first few ■rainuteß. The forward brigade of both sides ,*had a strenuous tussle throughout, but the passing, kicking and running of the High School backs proved a constant trial to the opposition. High School proved to be possessed of more head" than St. Mary's. Reynolds .scored the first try for High School, -and^within a few minutes Macky got over ; andfPeebles converted. THE LEAGUE GAME. \ WAIKATO V. CITY ROVERS. e THE SEASON CLOSED. The League football season was brought to • close in warm and languid weather conditions on Saturday. There was little wind to temper the rays of the sun, which beat, down mercilessly on the perspiring footballers. The attendance was not large at "Victoria Park, where the return matcn between the Loiyer Waikato representatives and the Auckland champions. City Rovers, was played. The latter team won by 19 points to 8. The Referees' Association and Auckland League teams played a curtain-raiser to the former match, and the referees won by 10 points to 5. 'LOWER WAIKATO V. CITY ROVERS The return match between the Lower Waikato League representative team and the City Rovers was played at Victoria Park on Saturday. City attacked from the outset. and at half-time had scored 16 points to 0. Tries were obtained by Clarke, McKubrcy, Mitchell, and Wetherall. Davidson "potted" a goal, and Fitzgerald converted a try. In the second spell Callaghan and Aubrey scored tries for Waikato in quick succession. Rukutai scored a try for City and Littlewood kicked a penalty goal for Waikato. The game ended: — City Rovers 19 Lower Waikato 8 Mr. Benson waa referee. REFEREES V. LEAGUE. The annual match between teams from th*> Auckland Referees' Association and the Auckland Rugby League was played at Victoria Park, and proved to bo a highly diverting curtain-raiser. In the.first spell Weston scored a try for the Referees which Hill converted, and the latter also'kicked a penalty goal. Wrighton scored a try for the League. After the change of ends Boswell kicked a penalty goal for the League, and one of the Referee forwards touched down in a scramble. The game ended:— Referees 10 League \\ 5 Mr. G. Frater was referee. OUTSIDE MATCHES. Thompson and Hills defeated Mennio and Dcy, 19 points to 5.
