WIRELESS IN THE ISLANDS.

STATION AT RAROTONGA.

PROPOSAL FOR ERECTION

[BY TELEGRAPIT. — PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

WELLINGTON, Friday. Is the House of Representatives tonight, ! Sir Joseph Ward announced that the Government had decided to erect a wireless station at Rarotonga- In ordinary circumstances the cost of erecting the plant would be about £5000, but possibly war conditions would involve some increase. Competition would be invited from wireless firms with a view to getting the best system. The station at Rarotonga would constitute another link in the Empire, as many islands of the Pacific, such as Samoa and Fiji, would be brought into closer touch with New Zealand, and, consequently, with other portions of the Empire. The work would be carried out by the Post and Telegraph Department.
