THE TERRITORIALS.

i BY SENTINEL. 1 I A district order has been issued to the | effect that territorials must hand in uni- ! form and equipment before leaving for I reinforcement camps. This order must i be strictly obeyed by all men leaving with , future drafts. j . i A class for the instructon of officers in , Garrison Artillery subjects will be held j on Thursday evenings, commencing on i July 20. Lieutenajit-Colonel J. Lyons, principal veterinary officer, has consented to give a course of six lectures on horses and horse management to the Auckland Army Service Corps. The first of the series was given on Thursday evening, and was much : appreciated. Members of other mounted J units will be welcomed at these lectures. j The next will be given on August 24. ! ■ I A routine order issued by the officer- [ commanding, Auckland Garrison Artillery i Division, states that Lieutenant F. Finch : has been posted to No. 6 Company and , Lieutenant H. P. C. Clark to No. l" Com- j pany. Lieutenant A. R. C. Claridge will resume duty with No. 6 Company. Lieu- | tenant J. Ewan, retired list, has been I called up for duty. "■ I The previous instructions in regard to j quartermasters for territorial units have j been cancelled. In future the duties of | adjutant and quartermaster of units will , be performed by separate persons, and I will not bo combined in the person of j a permanent officer. All territorial units will have as part of their establishment a quartermaster, as existing before the j framing of the previous instructions. ! Those units which have territorial force ] quartermasters will continue their em- I ployment ; any unit which has not a ter- | ritorial force quartermaster will appoint j one of the regimental officers to act in such position. The quartermaster will be ; one of the regimental officers and will > take his turn for promotion, not as a ' quartermaster, but as a regimental officer, according to seniority on the regimental j list, provided that he passes his examinations for promotion in the usual way ; that is to say, the quartermaster will be a regimental officer, and not a member of a special class of officer graded as quartermasters. A district order issued yesterday states it has beeu noticed that in certain territorial units no attempt has been made to complete the establishment by the promotion of captains to majors, and lieutenants to captains, and it has been suggested that promotions are delayed because some officers do not qualify for promotion and block those lower on the list. It must lie understood that if offi- ! cers do not take the opportunity to qualify for promotion, or fail .to pass" promotion ' examinations, they should be superseded i by officers lower "down the list, who; if j qualified for promotion, should be promoted in supersession of those who do not qualify. j The Army Service Corps orders for the month of August state that No. 2 Company will parade on the 14th and 28th. No. 5 Company on the Ist, 15th and 29th. and No. 1 Company on the 2nd. 16th and 30th. A lecture will be given by Colonel Lyons on horse anatomy and physiology on the 24th. Men must understand that this lecture is compulsory, and, as theso lectures are progressive, ' none should be missed. There was a marked improvement in dress and cleanliness last month. The men took more pride in themselves, but there was still room for improvement.'
