Lieutenant Simon James Stuart Couper, who is reported killed in action, fought through the Gallipoli campaign, where he was wounded, and had to undergo three operations in Malta before again joining his regiment in Egypt. Hp was horn and educated at Colac bhy. Southland, where he enlisted. Lieutenant Couper was better known as " Tuki Kupa." and was a magnificent. specimen of the Maori race, being over 15 stone in weight and 6ft in height. He was formerly a member of the Colao Bay volunteers, and in 1901 he was a member ''f the. Maori division rf the Federal Contingent which represented New Zealand at th<» opening of the Federal Parliament in Melbourne.
