THE ALIEN QUESTION.
♦ OPINION FROM whaxgarel [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN - CORItESrONDSTT.3 WHANGAREI. Tuesday. ; The agitation, which has been going on re- ; garding the presence of aliens in the ' North has not created a great deal of interest in Whangarei, and business men here do not attribute the same importance |to the Government proposals as do the ■ people of Dargaville. There aro very few I aliens resident in the town, though a very ! fair number come in on Saturdays and ' holidays from the surrounding districts. Speaking generally no particular antipathyis shown towards the aliens in Whangarei. I There is a feeling that it is not fair that I they should remain in profitable employi ment in the country, while the Sins of i New Zealanders are away righting to 'maintain the freedom of the Dominion. ' In regard to the problem of enlistment, : the opinion is largely held, here that it would have been wise for the Government ! to have accepted the offered Croatian conI tingent.
