DEVONPORT TELEPHONES.
♦ CONTINUOUS SERVICE URGED. DEPARTMENTS REGULATIONS. A REronT on the possibility of securing a continuous telephone service for Devoni port was presented by the Mayor, Mr. J. ; Henderson, at the meeting of the Borough ' Council last night. I A deputation recently waited on the ; council and pointed out that at present a j few people were paying £2, in addition to j the ordinary telephone charge, for the ; privilege of an all-night service, whereas I if two-thirds of the business subscribers ! and two-thirds of the private subscribers I signified their desire for an all-night serI vice the extra charge would be"£l for j each subscriber. They asked for the j assistance of the council in regard to the ; matter, suggesting that it should circu- ; larise subscribers and then approach the i Department. At that meeting the Mayor J was appointed to inquire into the matter. j and in his report last night he explained j that the Department's regulations provided that 151 subscribers were required before a vote could be taken, and that at the present time the number of subI scribers to the Devonport exchange was 111 short of the required number.
