SURPRISE ISLAND WRECK.

DRIVEN ON TO A REEF.

I Australian and N.Z." Cable Association. : SYDNEY, JUNE 28. Eleven* of the crew of the Sydney barque Manunui, which was wrecked at Surprise Island, have arrived by the French mail steamer. Captain Robertson states that, the barque was wrecked on May 26 hear Pelotes Reef, Surprise Island, After discharging her cargo of coal at Noumea the barque was proceeding to Surprise Island to load guano for Auckland. A strong current set the vessel onto a reef. The mainmast fell, and the vessel turned on her beam ends, becoming a hopeless wreck. The crew stood up until daylight, but were forced to abandon the vessel. They were rescued by the manager on the island. Next day the vessel began to break up. The crew spent 10 days at Surprise Island, and then chartered a cutter to take them to Noumea.
