The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Jack, presided . at the last meeting of the Wliangarei Borough Council, at ■which there were al.<o present :—Messrs. Jones, Holmes, Pickmere, Harrison, Dent, and Cutforth. 'J lie Hospital Board, notified that the levy f">- the year would amount to £651 13s 9d, and the matter was referred to the Finance Committee. It was resolved to hold over the appointment of two members < n the Kensington Park Committee. The question of a new award for general labourers was discussed, and the council decided to join the Auckland Provincial plovers' Association. Owing to the recent wet weather Lower Cameron Street is now in a baa state, and a petition was received praying for its improvement. A legal point is raised as to the council's responsibility, and it was decided to obtain the opinion of the solicitor to the Municipal Association before taking action. The damage done to Otaika Road by traffic to and from the abattoirs was again raised. The County Council, which I maintains the road, has appealed to the | borough for a contribution towards its. upkeep. The borough, however, says the work at the abattoirs is all done by contract, and it has no obligation to help iii the maintenance of a county road. It is possible a commission will be set up to inquire into 1 the position. It was resolved to remove the public pound to a more convenient position, near the electric power station, and a committee was appointed to report upon the cost, As a result of further negotiations Mr. Karn offered try sell land for the extension of Mair Park, and make the access road for £225. Mr. Karn is to be asked to hold open his offer unf.il the end of the financial year.
