"VALUE OF THE CHILD."

AN ADDRESS TO TEACHERS.

A TiiorGHTEri, address on "The Value of the Child" was given last night Dr. Elizabeth McDonald, medical inspector of schools, at a teachers' reunion at the Training College. Mrs. Forsyth presided, and upwards of 50 lady teachers were present. The proceeds are to be donated to the Navy Fund.

In the course of her remarks Dr. McDonald said sho feared the rigidity of the present educational system and its striving after external effects was blinding teachers to the necessity for character-building in the child. They should study children with patience and insight. Mothers and teachers should face the problem of stunted minds as well as that of stunted bodies, and there were lessons to be learned from the child. Dr. McDonald went on to discuss the need for realising the- proper time to teach the child, and said that attempts to prematurely force the growth of desirable virtues "often resulted in a tragic waste of the nervous energies of the child,
