QUIET DAY ON THE VERDUN FRONT.

BOMBARDMENT DIMINISHING IN INTENSITY GERMAN ATTACK NEAR THIAUMONT FAILS. (Received June 27. 5.20 p.m.) LONDON. JUNE 26. A French communique states: "North of Verdun there has been no infantry action during the course of the day. The bombardment is diminishing in intensity on both banks of the Meuse. Artillery action is uninterruptedly lively in the region of Hill 304." An earlier communique stated : '<■ On the left of the Meuse the artillery duel was particularly lively at Mort Homme. On the right bank a German attack at night west of the work at Thiaumont completely failed owing to our curtain and infantry fire. Between Fumin Wood and Chenois, in the course of a local operation, the French took some elements of a German trench. There was artillery fighting elsewhere." A German communique states: " The French made a night attack west of Mort Homme, which failed before our machine-guns and artillery. The enemy's attack with their strongest forces on the right bank of the Meuse against our positions at Froide Terre terminated during the evening in utter failure, The enemy were repulsed with great losses, after some hand-to-hand fighting in our lines."
