DEVONPORT TELEPHONES.

CONTINUOUS SERVICE NEEDED. The unsatisfactory nature of the Devonport telephone service was a subject on which a deputation of ratepayers interviewed the Devonport Borough Council I last evening. j Speaking for the deputation, Mr. G. I Sanford said that what was urgently re- ! quired was a continuous service, day and night, throughout the Devonport district. At present a few subscribers paid an extra sum of £2 in addition to the usual subscription of £5 for the privilege of an all-night service with Auckland. If, however, two-thirds of the business subscribers and two-thirds of the private subscribers signified that they required a continuous service, they could obtain this concession. Each subscriber would be required to pay an extra £1 per year. A continuous service would enable an attendant to be stationed at the Devonport bureau all night, with the result that any subscriber would be able to get into communication with Auckland, instead of the few who paid the £2 a year extra. The deputation asked for the assistance of the council in regard to the matter, suggesting that it should circularise subscribers and then approach the Department.

It was decided that the Mayor, Mr. J. Henderson, should. look into the proposal and report to the Finance and Legal Committee at its next meeting.
