THE RUGBY GAME. OPENING OF SEASON. PLAY IN NEW CONDITIONS. i The Auckland Busby Union's first and second grade competitions were commenced in fine weather on Saturday. The conditions were new, the members of the first grade teams being restricted to the age of 20 years and under. Tho football at Eden Park was decidedly interesting, far more interesting than was expected. The play in the Grafton-Marist Brothers Old Boys match, which was given pride of place at Eden Park, was fast And exciting throughout, and the football was clean and bright. Marist Brothers won by 12 points to 9. The results of the other first grade matches were: —University A defeated City by 8 points to 3, Ponsonby defeated University B by 9 points to 3, and Grammar School Old Boys A team defeated the club's B team by 39 points to 0. The details are as follows: — GRAFTON V. MARIST OLD BOYS. The Grafton-Marist Brothers Old Bovs match was given pride of position at Eden ■Park on Saturday. The play in the opening exchanges was lively. Grafton, was first to score, a try by Forbes giving the team three points. After change of ends a goal from a mark, kicked by Molloy for Marists equalised the scores. Grafton, however, was not to be denied, and Miller secured the ball near the line and dived over and scored. Just on half-time Edwards gained a try for Marists and again the teams were equal, 6 points each. Shortly after resumption McLarin intercepted a pass and had a long run with both teams in pursuit, but he crossed the line first. In this quarter Burton, from a free kick, placed a goal for Grafton and the teams entered the final quarter with the scores 9 ail Burton had a shot at goal from a free Kick and the ball was driven between the Posts, but in its flight it was touched by a Manst player and no goal was allowed. Just on time McLarin scored and the game ended; — Old Boys .. .. 12 Mr. A. Coltman was referee. GRAMMAR SCHOOL OLD BOYS. A match was played on No. 2 ground, of,? ,' b6^ the G ™*™<« School Old Boys A and B teams. The former won by 39 points to 0. Tries were secured by McLean (3), Ross (2), Bagnall, Baddeley, C. and A. Nicholson. Tries were converted by McLean (4), Ivil and Wilson. At half time the game was brought to a premature end with the scores: — Grammar School Old Boys A . . 89 Grammar School Old Boys B . . Q Mr. Miller was referee. CITY V. UNIVERSITY A. The City-University A mateh. played at the Show Ground was won by the latter team by 8 points to 3. The whole of University's points were scored in the first half of the same. Two tries were secured by Bobinson and one was converted by Boucher. PONSONBY V. UNIVERSITY B. Ponsonby met and defeated the University B team at the Show Grounds by 9 points to 3. Ponsonby attacked eariy in the game, and Biddiclt scored a try. Before half-time Hall touched down for University, and the game was 3-all at the spell. University set up a strong attack after resumption of play, but the effort was fruitless. Ponsonby then took a hand in the game, and Watson scored a try. The lead was increased by a penalty goal kicked by Belsham, and the game ended:— Ponsonby 9 University B 3 Mr* A, Cliffe was referee. SECOND GRADE. Marist Brothers defeated Hibernian by 9 points to 0. Ponsonby defeated Grafton by 22 points to 0. Badeley (2). Minogue (2). Foss. and Bourke scored tries, two of which Badeley converted. Grammar Old Boys defeated City by 33 points to 0. SENIOR CADET MATCHES. o,Fourth Company Senior Cadets defeated 31st Company by 33 points to 0. PRIMARY SCHOOL MATCHES. A GRADE. Point Chevalier beat Te Papapa by 25 points to 0. Mount Albert and Parnell drew—3 points each. Mount Eden beat Avondale by 6 points to 0. Ponsonby defeated Napier Street by 11 points to 0. Brown and McWhirter scored tries. McWhirter converted one, and also kicked a penalty goal. Bemuera defeated Devonport by 17 points to 0. F. Stewart (3), Badeley and Bosemaa • scored tries and Stewart converted one. Vermont Street defeated Newton East by 6 pomts to 0. Tries were scored by Griffin and Keenan. B GRADE. ! Normal defeated Richmond Road by 28' points to 3. Soon after play started McGregor gained a try, but a touch-down by Spence equalised the scores. Before half-time Stannaway scored for the home team,- and the position at the interval was: Otahuhu, 6 points; Grafton Athletic. 3. Grafton attacked on resumption, and for some time gave Otahuhu no respite. The defence was sound, and the danger was removed. However, Wallace eventually scored an unconverted try for Grafton, end the visitors thus led by two points. A most determined attempt was made by the Otahuhu men. to improve their score, and as a result J. Browne got across the line. Sunnyside defeated Richmond by 45 pointe to 0. Richmond A beat Thames Old Boys by 22 points to 5. FOURTH GRADE. City Rovers defeated Northcote by 42 points to 0. Sunnyside defeated Ponsonby by 10 points to 0. Newton defeated Northcote A by 32 points to 0. Tries were scored by Mansell (2), Fabian, Grinlmgton, Sharp (3), Hineman, and goals were kicked by Thorp (2), Grinlington and Fabian. FIFTH GRADE. North Shore defeated Otahuhu by 9 points to 2. For North Shore W. Proebert scored a try. Coleman converted and also kicked two goals. SIXTH GRADE. North Shore defeated Otahuhu by 41 points to 0. Rogers (5). Seagar (5), Harper (2), and Clements, Davis and Cleal scored tries. Wheeler converted four.
