GRAND DUKE NICHOLAS REWARDED FOR SUCCESSES.
OFFERED HIGH COMMAND IN ARMIES IN POLAND.

German newspapers report that owing to his successes in Asia Minor the Grand Duke Nicholas has been offered a high command in the Russian armies opposing General von Hind en burg in Poland.
The Grand Duke Nicholas was relieved of the supreme command of the Russian armies operating in Poland and Galiciaa position which he had held since the outbreak of —on September 5 last, following the success of the German "drive" towards Dvinsk. At the time of the Grand Duke's supercession the Tsar issued an Imperial rescript containing the following acknowledgment of military services rendered by him: "You, under the eyes of the whole of Russia., proved steadfast, your bravery inspiring the profound confidence and good wishes of all." Immediately afterwards the late commander-in-chief was .appointed Viceroy of the Caucasus and commander-in-chief of the Russian forces ' ,in that theatre of war. In this command the Grand Duke achieved signal ;.';? success, and " the big man with a far-reaching vision and a keen determination •>;,.' to move steadily forward to victory" so thoroughly reorganised Russia's > ;;:!?:V > Caucasian army as to effect the liberation of the Armenian race by the capture ,\ •.', of Erzeroum, the strongest strategical position in Asia' Minor. The fall of : iW:&[ the '«Metz of Eastern Turkey" was followed later by the storming of Bitlis, ,: i and the capture of Mush, Kermansbah, and Trebizond.
