PETROGRAD. MAY 14.
Despatches from Kermanshah, Persia, give details of 16 hours' of
sanguinary fighting at the Khurdish village of Sarmil. This is situ-
ated on a hill between, two rugged mountain ranges, 10 miles from Kirind. The engagement is the first that has taken place in Persia
exclusively against Turkish regulars. Sarmil blocked the Russian advance on Kasrishirin.
The fighting commenced at dawn. The Turks, who wefe defend- ; ing the historic road to Mesopotamia, withstood the devastating Russian guns and fire with successive onslaughts of infantry until midnight. They then fell back to Kasrishirin. A British officer accompanying the Russians speaks in the highest terms of their valour.
