EXPORT OF HEMP.
NO SHIPPING SPACE.
MANAWATU MILLS CLOSE.
There is still practically no prospect of obtaining export shipping space for the congested supplies of hemp in New Zealand. Quantities are coming in as usual to the merchants, who have now large stocks on hand. To make matters worse there is very little storing space. The Auckland Harbour Board provided a limited area in their sheds on the wharves, but this has now been almost all taken up. Also about 40 per cent, of the fibre now being received in Auckland is of common or rejected grade, and is thus difficult to sell. The flax mills in the Manawatu district have been dosed for a month, and it is feared that the Auckland mills will also have to stop working next month instead of in June or July, as in past years. Latest advices state that fair quantities of Manila hemp have been offered in the London market, and have been bringing the abnormally high prices of about £45 per ton c.i.L for good fair grade and about £43 for low fair.
