NIGHT PASSES CALMLY ON THE VERDUN FRONT.
PLANS FOR ATTACK ABANDONED UNDER FRENCH FIRE. FRENCH OABUALTIES IN SEVEN WEEKS LESS THAN 38,000CAPTURE OF PRISONERS GREATLY EXAGGERATED BY ENEMY (Received April 14. 7.15 p.m.) London, April 13. The French official report states that last night was calm in the whole of the Verdun front. A German attack was prepared at dusk yesterday against our positions on Hill 304, near Haucourt, but the enemy was unable even to leave his trenches. The operation was rendered abortive by curtain fire and enfilading fire upon the German columns assembled in Malancourt Wood. There was no other incident of importance on the rest of the front. The Germans claim they captured 35,876 unwounded prisoners at Verdun between February 21 and April 10. Experts point out that this number exceeds the total number of the French dead, wounded and prisoners. The number of prisoners cannot exceed 17,000.
