LEV . CROSSINGS,
EH ■'"' <.'«,' IN SIX MILES.
t!ic HbBALD . ! Ap- I li. i-".6). A.\c-'.En rail'- ay acci tout lias been causer! 1 y ! .0 lovel crossing on tiio Newmarket Eo.>'. during tho course of yesterday. Th<s level crossing.? on this railway ;iro a disgrace to the p.ovince. As an Albert car was passing the- crossing yesterday the horse tripped over the rails-and fell, seriously injuring its knees. ' Fortunately, no one was injured. Had a string of waggons come down tho lino at the time the case might have been very different. We noticed yesterday that there were 18 level crossings on the lino between Auckland and Onehunga, a distance of t\s. miles. We find, on inquiry, that this is the correct number. Such a thing was never known before in,any part of tho world. In England Iherb is great difficulty in getting a Bill/for a railway Mssed in which a level cutting appears, and it is only permitted where it cannot bo possibly avoided. In the Auckland and Dtury railway the engineers have actually altered the levels of tho road to malco tiio crossings come upon tho level.
