ANNUAL PRIZE DAYS.

m QUEEN VICTORIA SCHOOL. SUCCESSFUL YEAR'S WORK. SEWTNO FOR THE TROOPS. The annual breaking-up and distribution of prizes at the "Queen Victoria School for: Maori Girls took place yesterday after-1 ' noon. Many visitors were present, this ! being the first occasion 011 which a public ' prize-giving in connection with the school, ' lias been held. The chairman of the Anglican Diocesan General Trust Board. Mr. i Batger. presided, and on ' the platform I with him were Bishop and Mrs. Averill, i Mr. Norman Williams, and Archdeacon I Mar-Murray. I A song, " God Defend New Zealand," was sung in .-la-ori by the girls, after which the chairman commented on the excellent results obtained, and congratulated the stiff and the school on tho good work done during the year. I The report of the lady superintendent, Mrs. Mirams, referred to the steady improvement in the work of the elder girls this year, especially in domestic subjects, j cooking, laundry work, and sewing. The 1 dressmaking class had been most snecessI ful. the girls cutting out and finishing the j work entirely by themselves. A large Lquantity of sewing had been done for th« I hospital ship, the Xavy league and the Red Cross Society. A large number of Fox. hen ja'-kptp. et<- . having been made, i and several dozen pair of 60s knitted for r members of the Maori Contingent. All : this work had been done out of school I hours, thus showing the interest and enj thusiasm of lie girls. Great interest had i been shown in the game of basketball, I which, besides being a source of great , pleasure to the girls, had largely helped j to maintain the excellent standard of health enjoyed during the year, while the senior team had succeeded in again winning the shield for Auckland. The report of Miss Ingall, headmistress, was then read, and the prizes were distrihnied hv Bishop Averill. these consisting of a number of well chosen gifts, pictures, writing cases, blotters, etc.. in addition to the usual handsomely-hound books. On behalf of the General Trust Board, Mr. Batger read a letter, expressing their deep regret at being compelled to accept the resignation of Miss Ingall. headmistress, who. after 12 years of service, was giving up her work on account of ill-health. Bishop Averill. in addressing the pupils, expressed pleasure at the high standard of the year's work, and »_•, -aled to them to maintain the same after leaving the school. Three members were then admitted to the newly-formed Old Girls' Association, and the ceremony concluded with the singing of the National Anthem in Maori and in English. Afternoon tea was served to the visitors, and much interest taken in a very fine display of church-embroidery work'done by the girls, each article showing greatest care, and- a hi eh degree of skill.
