SHORT OF MEN IN STOKEHOLD.
[BT TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
Wellington-, Friday. The steamer Maori was delayed till twenty-five minutes past eight to-night. The vessel's articles expired to-day. and all signed on again except four firemen. One of these rejoined at seven o'clock, and three trimmers were offered promotion to firemen, so that three soldiers going South could sign on as trimmers for the trip. The trimmers, however, objected to promotion on these conditions. Eventually, as the vacancies in the stokehold could not be filled, it was decided that the vessel proceed to Lyttelton under two-thirds of her boiler power.
