EDUCATION EXPENDITURE.
BUILDINGS AND LAND. NEED FOR NATIONAL SCHEME. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PBESS ASSOCIATION.I Napier, Friday. Thtb Minister for Education, the Hon. J. A. Hanan, replying to representations made to him, said he deemed it his duty to state plainly that at the present time he was not prepared, owing to the finan- ; cial conditions consequent on tho war, and j the need to keep down public expenditure to the lowest possible limit without imi pairing efficiency, to promise a vote for a secondary school or for a site therefor. In connection with primary education and primary schools, many applications were coming in for financial assistance to acquire new sites in order to have sufficient ground for new building or playground areas. The question of scrapping buildings, primary and secondary, and of acquiring large areas of land for each school would involve a large sum of money. It would bo much larger if time was allowed to go by and properties went up in value. A national scheme therefore was required ' to provide a sum of money being set aside by Parliament to meet such requirements later on. He proposed to schedule the dawns of technical, primary, and secondary schools, in order to see what money would bo n«es3ary for the purpose. A national scheme on this subject should be formulated and submitted to the National Cabinet.
