FRUIT AND PRODUCE MARKET.

Business in the fruit and produce markets during the week has been very good. An increased quantity of local fruit has come _ forward, and heavy shipments of American oranges, apple's, and lemons arrived by the Waimarino. The Talune brought a large cargo of bananas from Suva, and, although in many instances the fruit 'jrrived in an unsatisfactory condition an excellent demand ruled for all lines forward.

The Niagara is due on Monday from Vancouver with the last of the season's apples. In local fruit, hothouse grapes are in large supply, and are much cheaper. Lemons nave considerably declined in price, _ owing to heavy supplies from San Francisco. Tomatoes and gooseberries have improved in values. Plums and peaches sell well according to sample. New potatoes are in heavy supply, and are firm at (jactations. The onion mar feet is unsatisfactory; too many inferior and bad lines are being offered. While best Australians are a little weaker, supplies are in excess of requirements. Fresh hotter and eggs are in good supply at current prices. Sellers are strongly advised to send their consignments to arrive for the markets of December 17 and 21, and not to hold them back till Christmas Eve.

A satisfactory report was presented by the directors of the Kauri Timber Company, Ltd., at the 27th annual meeting of the company. The report covered the year ended August 31 last, and stated that notwithstanding the restricted business and consequently diminished profits which the war conditions had entailed, the result of the year's business had been quite up to expectation. In conformity with the provision of the Federal Income Tax Act, exempting from taxation profits accumulated prior to its operation, the various funds representing those had been grouped under one heading. After making necessary provision for depreciation, the balance at the credit of profit and loss, including £22,277 brought forward from last year, amounted to £69,245, less dividend at the rate of 8 per cent. per annum paid in June, £23,400, leaving £43,843, out of which it was proposed to pay a further dividend at the rate of c, per cent, per annum, accounting for £23,400, and to carry forward to next year the balance of £22,443. CHRISTCHTJRCH PRODUCE MARKET [BY TELEGRAPH.PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHBiBTOHTracH, Friday. During the past week there has been a considerable amount of business passing in wheat, chiefly sales to North Island millers. This was nearly all grain out of store, and the variety almost all Tuscan. In the last few days 10,000 sacks of various lots were disposed of at prices equal to 5s 6d f.o.b. Very little wheat is offering by growers, and several declined offers of 4s 10d and 5s at country stations. Flour is in active demand, and householders have apparently been stocking up, aa at the outbreak of the war. Continued dry weather and further reports of damage to the wheat crops, also the firmer market in Australia, has caused an increased demand for wheat and flour. There is good inquiry for oats, and prices advanced about 6d, in view of the next crop being a very light one. Barley is likely to be very short, as the crop generally is very light. The potato market is n<yW practically over, and new potatoes are plentiful. MELBOURNE MARKETS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, December 10.
