SYDNEY'S REGATTA.

PROGRAMME CURTAILED The question whether the Sydney Anim versary Regatta should be held in 1916 was discussed at a public meeting last week. Judge Backhouse, speaking from the chair, said that every true sportsman should not do anything that would prevent men from enlisting or going to the front. The anniversary regatta, however, was one of the oldest continuous functions carried on in any part of the British Em pire. He certainly thought that something should be —not to hold the regatta in the ordinary way —they could not do that. They should have an afternoon or day which they could fairly call the celebration of the regatta, so that the continuity would not be broken. He had seen the State Governor, who had taken a great interest in the regatta, and the Governor had agreed with him. His Excellency said he would invite as many of those interested as possible to accompany him on his steamer, and that lie would make her, as it were, the official boat of the day. Only two races, he thought, should be held. It would be absolutely criminal at present to go to the public for money. It was resolved that the regatta be- held on the lines indicated by the _ chairman—one rowing race and threw sailing races.
