NORTHERN WAIROA NEWS.

DARGAVILLE. A meeting of the council of the Kaipara Chamber of Commerce was held last week. A communication was received from the Postmaster-General stating that it had been arranged to provide direct telephone connection between Auckland and Dargaville, that a sum for the work had been on the Estimates, and that, when the money was available, the line would be constructed. Consideration of the purchase of a town clock, to be placed in the Dargaville post office tower, was deferred. It was decided to support the proposal of the Affiliated Society of Chambers of Commerce to foster the question of preferential trade within the Empire, with modified conditions in regard to the overseas trade of the allies. It was resolved to urge the Government to grant the claims of the Hobson County Council for monetary assistance in the formation of roads on the Tarawhati Block, and the clerk was instructed to ask the Prime Minister that a census of all live stock ;:i North Auckland counties be taken annually when the sheep returns are being collated. The Hobsort Acclimatisation Society recently liberated 500 perch in one of the lakes near the West Coast, south of Dargaville. This week a fine lot of 50,000 rainbow trout was liberated in Lake Wainui which covers an area of about 10 acres and possesses a fine supply of food. In a few years the fishing there should be particularly good. A "right" whale,"7Bft in length has been stranded on the West Coast beach near Te Kopuru (Kaipara). Owing to the fact that the animal had been dea.d some days previous to coming ashore, no use could be made of the carcase; though two settlers in the vicinity secured the .whalebone from the mouth. TANGITERORIA. After a prolonged season of idleness, the f axnnll plant is again in commission, providing work for some 30 men. limber work is slack. Between 30 and 40 men are engaged on the railway works clearing and forming the route adjacent to the station site, and with the fine weather coming in their numbers are to be increased. The distance by line to Auckland will be 118 miles. Settlers are looking forward to the connection being completed within a few years.
