EXPORT OF MEAT.
POSITION MUCH IMPROVED.
MORE STORAGE ACCOMMODATION'. [BY TELEGBaPH. —SPECIAL COrtBESrONDENT.] Wellington, Sunday. A statement concerning the export of frozen meat was made by the Prime Minister to-day. " The increased accommodation which has been provided at freezing work's all over the country," said Mr. Massey. " will make it impossible for congestion, such as we experienced last year, to occur during the coming season. We shall have storage for not less than 1,000,000 extra carcases of meat this year, and unless something occurs to disturb the arrangement we have with the Imperial Government, it is the business of the Imperial Government to keep up a good supply of ships. I am hoping that nothing will happen to disturb the arrangement, which has worked very smoothly indeed. We have bought nearly £5.000,000 worth of meat now. and we have still nearly 1,000,000 carcases in the stoves. There will not be a great deal of this left 'in the stores by the end of this month, but by that time come of the freezing works in the North Island will be commencing operations again.*'
In reply to a question, Mr. Massey said it was not correct to assume that the heavy export of meat was causing depletion of . our stocks. • " The number of sheep in the country is greater than it was this time last year." be said. " One cause that may have operated to deplete our flocks is the drought that has affected certain districts, especially Canterbury and North Otago. I quite expect that there may be less sheep in those two districts, but elsewhere the stocks have kept up wonderfully." .:» ; ■■"■* '„.'■'- ''."'■
