BARMAN ASSAULTED.

MAGISTRATE'S STRICTURES.

A man named John Gunson was charged before Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M., in the Police Court on Saturday with .assaulting Walter de Mans, a barman, by striking him on the head wjth a beer glass. The accused said he knew nothing about the matter.

Evidence was given by de Mans, who appeared in the witness-box with his head bandaged. He was . employed at the Waverley Hotel. Accused came into the bar the worse for liquor on Friday night and asked for a drink. Witness told him he had had enough, and refused to supply him. As witness turned away he was struck a heavy blow on the head and knocked senseless. Accused asked for leniency on the plea that he had a. wife arid family. The magistrate said that accused might easily have been before the Court on a charge of murder. His action was cowardly. It could only be described as a murderous assault. If he had been a single man he would havo received two months' imprisonment. As it was hie would have to go to gaol for one month.

FINED FOR DRUNKENNESS. ' Two third offending inebriates named Henry Albert Griffiths and Franlff Whorstey were each fined £1 a nd prohibited. One first offender, who did not appear, forfeited his bail, 10s, and three others were fined 5s each. FOURTEEN DAYS IN GAOL. Charges of committing a nuisance and using obscene language were .preferred against William Dalziel, who pleaded guilty. The accused was convicted on the first charge, and sent to prison for 14 days on the second charge.
